How to use the Placeholder Image Generator

  1. Enter the width and height in pixels.
  2. Choose the background and text colours, and edit the label (it shows the size by default).
  3. Pick a format. SVG is tiny and sharp at any size; PNG, JPG and WebP are available for tools that need bitmaps.
  4. Download the image.

Tips for better results

  • Use SVG for web prototypes: a placeholder is often under 500 bytes.
  • Keep sufficient contrast between text and background so the label is readable; the contrast checker can verify the pair.
  • For responsive tests, make several sizes and different aspect ratios to see how the layout reacts.

Limitations you should know about

  • Sizes up to 4000 × 4000 px are supported.
  • This tool creates files; it does not provide a hosted placeholder URL.
  • The label is drawn with your device’s default sans-serif font, so it looks slightly different between systems.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the images commercially?

The images contain only your colours and text, so there is nothing to license. They are intended as stand-ins until you have real images.

Why offer SVG as well as PNG?

SVG placeholders are text-based, tiny and perfectly sharp at any size, which makes them ideal for prototypes.

Is there a hosted placeholder URL I can link to?

No. To avoid depending on a third-party service, download the file and host it yourself.
