How to use the Favicon Generator

  1. Add a square logo, ideally 512 × 512 px or larger, or switch to “Letter” to make a simple icon from text.
  2. Choose padding, background colour and corner rounding. Preview shows how it looks at 16, 32 and 180 px.
  3. Set the app name and theme colour for the manifest.
  4. Download the ZIP, upload the files to your site’s root folder, and paste the HTML snippet into your <head>.

Tips for better results

  • Favicons are tiny. Simple shapes and a single strong colour survive at 16 × 16; fine detail and thin lines do not.
  • The Apple touch icon should be opaque (no transparency); iOS fills transparent areas with black. Use a background colour for it.
  • Keep the icon files in your site root (for example /favicon.ico), which is where many browsers and tools look by default.

Limitations you should know about

  • The ZIP contains: favicon.ico (16, 32, 48 px), favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, apple-touch-icon.png (180 px), android-chrome-192x192.png, android-chrome-512x512.png and site.webmanifest.
  • It does not create an SVG favicon; if your logo is an SVG you can serve it as well with a <link rel="icon" type="image/svg+xml"> tag.
  • Icons cannot be previewed inside real browser tabs or phone home screens here; test on your own devices after uploading. Browsers cache favicons aggressively, so changes can take a while to appear.

Frequently asked questions

Which favicon files do I really need?

A favicon.ico in the site root, a 180 px Apple touch icon, and 192 and 512 px PNGs referenced from a web manifest cover browsers, iOS and Android. This tool produces all of them.

Why does my old favicon still show?

Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Try a private window, clear the cache for your site, or add a version query such as /favicon.ico?v=2 to the link.

Does the ICO file contain several sizes?

Yes. It holds 16, 32 and 48 pixel PNG images so operating systems can choose the best one.
